Night 1 - Kokoda Track
Kokoda Courage together with Health and Fitness Holidays is trekking the Kokoda Track. The trekkers have been training hard in preparation for the 96 km of rugged terrain of the Owen Stanley Range.
A huge shout out to about half of this group who have been waiting patiently for this trek of a lifetime, their original trek was planned for March 2020 when COVID struck. Well done on their commitment to stay fit, strong and prepared for over 3 years!
The crew arrived safely in Port Moresby yesterday, settling in to the hotel, before final equipment checks and the final trek briefing about the journey ahead.
Today started super early with a delicious buffet breakfast at the Lamana Hotel before a scenic 30min flight to Popondetta and a bus ride up the Kokoda highway.
At Kokoda, the crew explored the Memorial Museum and the various monuments on the plateau, the site of a vicious battle between Australia and the Japanese in 1942.
Kokoda Courage takes a medic on each trek. We are fortunate to have Ben on this trip, not only overseeing the health and well being of our trekkers but also spending time caring for our support team from PNG, he is also passionate about caring for the locals in the villages along the way.
After lunch the crew headed up the first major hill to Deniki and the stunning views back down the Yodda Valley. Tonight they enjoyed a vegetable and cashew curry for dinner and some singing from our amazing support team, descendants of the fuzzy wuzzy angels.
